The prevention of occupational risks in the construction industry: information of interest
Compulsory training
The construction industry is the first sector to have its own specific regulatory regime for occupational risk prevention training.
Before you start work, you must have received at least 8 to 20 hours of compulsory training in occupational risk prevention. The company will arrange for you to be trained by an approved body, such as the Fundación Laboral de la Construcción (forthcoming dates). Once you have completed this training, you will be able to apply for your Professional Construction Industry Card.
If you have already completed training courses that you think may be valid, please contact the Fundación Laboral de la Construcción País Vasco.
The company must also inform you of all the risks involved in your activities, and about the working environment and the equipment you will be using.
Initial medical examination
Before you start work, the company will arrange for you to have an initial medical examination, which is compulsory in the construction sector.
Protective equipment
On a construction site, you must always be protected by collective protection equipment (guardrails, nets, etc.). If this is not sufficient, the company must provide you with appropriate personal protective equipment (helmet, gloves, harness, etc.).
You must use and take care of this equipment in accordance with the instructions provided.
On-site prevention officer – your professional expert
There is someone on the construction site who is responsible for preventing occupational risks and whom you can contact whenever you need to. They are fellow workers who have also received exclusive preparation and training to monitor the working environment.
